Saint Joseph East Women's Services offer a variety of educational and fun classes to help prepare for a positive birth experience and beyond. Even the youngest of future siblings will enjoy a class on what it means to have a new baby in the house.
To ensure enrollment in our classes, please register when you are approximately 20 weeks gestation; classes fill very quickly!
Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for reduced fee classes. Examples include, but are not limited to, if you use a Medical Card, or if you are age 21 or under. Before registering, please call our office for more information: 859-967-2229.
**In the event that Fayette County Schools has been closed due to inclement weather, your class will also be cancelled and a make-up date scheduled.**
 Childbirth Class: A 4-Week Series
Cost: $45.00 per Couple
Light refreshments provided
Our 4-week series is a comprehensive and informative class on what to expect during labor, delivery and postpartum. Normal labor processes, options for pain relief -- including breathing/relaxation, medications and care after delivery are all discussed. It is best to begin attending these classes when you are 28-30 weeks gestation. Classes fill quickly, be sure to reserve your space early!
During this class you will be given your "Admitting Folder" which has important consent forms and hospital information (if you are unable to attend, please contact our Maternity Education Coordinator, Diane Prewitt, RN at 859-967-2229 to have your folder picked up or mailed anytime after your 36th week).
You are also encouraged to take our Breastfeeding and Baby Steps classes to provide you with a well-rounded background before the birth of your child.
Please bring two pillows, a blanket and your support person with you to enhance your comfort. Classes must be paid for in advance.

Weekend Childbirth Class
Cost: $35.00 per Couple

Our Weekend Class is a one-time, one-day class and is an abbreviated form of our 4-week series. It is best to attend this class when you are 32-34 weeks gestation. Classes fill quickly, be sure to reserve your space early! You will need to bring a healthy sack lunch/dinner (we have a refrigerator for storage) with you. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided.
During this class you will be given your "Admitting Folder" which has important consent forms and hospital information (if you are unable to attend, please contact our Maternity Education Coordinator, Diane Prewitt, RN at 859-967-2229 to have your folder picked up or mailed anytime after your 36th week).

Private Childbirth Class
Cost: $125.00

Our Private Childbirth Class is a one-time, one-day class and is suggested for those parents-to-be who prefer to have one-on-one instruction. The class includes all aspects of our Weekend Childbirth Class. It is best to attend this class when you are 32-34 weeks gestation. Please bring two pillows and your support person with you to enhance your comfort. Classes are made by appointment only. Classes must be paid for in advance.

Breathing and Relaxation Class
Cost: Free (only offered to moms attending a regular or private childbirth class)
While our Childbirth Education class is a comprehensive class, some moms feel they would benefit from additional Breathing and Relaxation practice. This extra class is free to you and should be taken after you have completed the Childbirth Education class. Please bring two pillows and your support person with you to enhance your comfort.
 Baby Steps Class
Cost: $25.00 per Couple
Light refreshments provided
This one-time class covers material designed to make you feel more comfortable and secure in your ability to take care of your newborn. Covered topics: what to expect in the hospital, normal newborn appearances, caring for your newborn, feeding, bathing, cord and circumcision care. We also include in the session a hands-on activity on swaddling, diaper changing, and holding of the infant using life-sized dolls. This class can be taken alone or with any of the others offered here at Saint Joseph East. Classes must be paid for in advance.

 Grandparents Class
Cost: $25.00 per Couple

This one-time class covers material designed to make you feel more comfortable and secure in your ability to take care of your new grandchild. Covered topics: what to expect in the hospital, normal newborn appearances, caring for the newborn, feeding, bathing, cord and circumcision care. We talk about changes, misconceptions and old wives tales! We also include a hands-on activity of swaddling, diaper changing, and holding of the infant using life-sized dolls. This class can be taken alone or with any of the others offered here at Saint Joseph East. Classes must be paid for in advance.

Breastfeeding
Cost: $25.00 per Couple

Prenatal preparation for breastfeeding focuses on advantages of breastfeeding, proper positioning and latch-on, guidelines for adequate breastfeeding, how to prevent and resolve discomforts, breast pumps and the storage of milk. This class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Suggested during third trimester. Spouses are encouraged to attend. Please bring a doll or stuffed toy for positioning practice. Classes must be paid for in advance.

Infant CPR
Cost: $25.00 per Couple
This is a one-time class. Parents will be able to learn basic techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and choking for their newborn. Covers infants from newborn to 1 year old. There is a limit of 3 couples per class. This is not a certification class; no AHA certificate will be given. Classes must be paid for in advance. No refund will be given if you cancel this class with less than 2 weeks notice.

 Sibling Class
Cost: $15.00 per Child

Recommended for children ages 3 to 5 years old. This is a fun class for big brothers and sisters. Children will tour the maternity unit and become familiar with where their mommy and new sibling will be staying while at the hospital. They will also gain hands on experience with holding and diapering a life size doll. Our goal is to promote a strong family unit as well as relieving some of the anxieties of bringing a new baby into the household. A parent or guardian must accompany the child. This class is limited to 5 children per class so register early! Classes must be paid for in advance.

"Older" Sibling Class
Cost: $15.00 per Child

Recommended for children 6 to 12 years old. This is a great class for "older" big brothers and sisters who are expecting a new little sibling! Our goal is to promote a strong family unit as well as relieving some of the anxieties of bringing a new baby into the household. Children will tour the maternity unit and become familiar with where their mom and new sibling will be staying while at the hospital. They will also gain hands on experience with holding and diapering a life size doll. A parent or guardian must accompany the child. This class is limited to 6 children, so register early! Classes must be paid for in advance.
