Music Expression
Rhythms Drum Circle
"Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul." - Plato
Music has been used in medicine for thousands of years. From the Ancient Greeks to the Shamans, historically it was believed to heal bodies and souls. More recently and in the cancer care setting, studies have evaluated the effectiveness of music in the short-term reduction in anxiety, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, nausea, insomnia, depression and even pain. However brief, this comfort measure is finding its place as another invaluable tool in the arsenal to provide relief from physical and emotional distress during treatment and recovery.
Rhythms Drum Circle is one of the ways Saint Joseph Cancer Center Resource Services has chosen to incorporate this tool. The Circle is a music expression opportunity for cancer survivor participants led by Dow Cobb, M. Div. Willis Music, a local retailer, loans a variety of percussion instruments for the activity.
We welcome anyone living with any type of cancer to join us for musical expression, relaxation and healing fun! No hand drum or music experience is necessary. Everyone has inner rhythm: The beat of our hearts.
