What prostate health screenings are available?
The most common types of screening procedures used in for prostate cancer:
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test -- This test measures PSA levels in blood. Elevated levels can lead further testing or a prostate biopsy as determined by the physician.
- Digital rectal exam (DRE) -- This exam allows the physician to feel for any bumps or hard areas, on the prostate gland, that might be cancer.
When do you need to get prostate health screenings?
The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for the early detection of prostate cancer.
- For men ages 50 or older:
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, annually
- Digital rectal examination (DRE), annually
- For men at high risk and ages 40 to 50:
- Earlier screening guidelines may be recommended depending on your personal risk factors.
