Cancer Risk Factors

 A risk factor is anything that increases a person's chance of developing a disease, such as cancer. Research shows that certain risk factors increase the likelihood that a person will develop cancer. The most common risk factors for cancer include:

  • Growing older
  • Tobacco use
  • Sunlight exposure
  • Ionizing radiation
  • A family history of cancer - Some types of cancer run in certain families, but most cancers are not clearly linked to the genes we inherit from our parents.
  • Alcohol use
  • Poor diet, Being overweight & Lack of physical activity - Diet, physical activity, and excess body weight, and may affect your risk of cancer.
