Bone Densitometry

(Osteoporosis Screening)
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures. If it is not prevented or is left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These fractures occur typically in the hip, spine, or wrist.

The healthcare professionals at Saint Joseph Breast Center offer Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scans at the Saint Joseph East Medical Office Building and Saint Joseph Berea. Currently, the DEXA scan is the most widely used method to measure Bone Mineral Density. Marta Kenney, M.D., Kimberly Stigers, M.D., and Margaret O'Neill Brown, M.D., are certified by the International Society of Bone Densitometry to interpret these studies.

Primary indications for DEXA:

  • Postmenopausal women
  • Patients being treated with medications known to cause osteoporosis
  • Monitoring treatment of known osteoporosis or low bone density

The National Osteoporosis Foundation has more information on risk factors, prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis.
